To celebrate the fact that I've successfully completed another trip around the sun during the past year and am lucky enough to be starting another go-round, I'm inviting everyone who enjoys sushi to join me at Yokohama Sushi in support of the "Sushi for Sendai" cause!

(I am a Navy brat. I don't often mention it, but I grew up in Atsugi, Japan, which is about 25 miles from Yokohama, Japan. Being able to celebrate at this restaurant will be a happy reminder of my childhood! Were it not for the traveling I experienced while growing up, I might never have made it to New Orleans... Also, as a New Orleanian, I am a volunteer and occasional blogger for the American Red Cross of Southeast Louisiana, the organization affiliated with the "Sushi for Sendai" benefit effort.)

From my perspective, there are distinct similarities between Japan and New Orleans, to wit: Both the Japanese and New Orleanians are curious about and amused by the antics of "foreigners," such as myself. Both cultures embrace a delightfully offbeat, sometimes subtle, and often quirky sense of humor. Both consider certain seafood choices as delicacies, ones often regarded with suspicion by the unadventurous. Both have a colorful history with regard to "ladies of the night." Both have the most amazing and joyful festivals, a deep and abiding bond with history, and share a love of jazz music. And of all the "cultchas" I've experienced in my lifetime to date, both places have the kindest and most generous people I have ever met, people who have raised the bar when it comes to making guests feel welcomed.

(In case you were wondering, bringing a guest or three to this event is also welcomed!)

The only present I'm requesting this year is your presence; I'm giving my birthday to "Sushi for Sendai." Let's eat, drink, and be merry, knowing that we're doing a little more to help the people affected by the earthquake and the tsunami.

Please open your hearts and empty your wallets! -- xok
